Most Cocktail Hag recipes use millilitres. Use this as a rough guide:

  • 15 ml ≈ 0.5 oz (half ounce)
  • 30 ml ≈ 1 oz
  • 45 ml ≈ 1.5 oz
  • 60 ml ≈ 2 oz
  • 90 ml ≈ 3 oz

A standard jigger is usually 30/60 ml or 25/50 ml. Measure rather than free-pour for consistency.

Common Substitutions

  • No triple sec / Cointreau? Use orange liqueur, or a small splash of orange juice + a touch of simple syrup.
  • No fresh citrus? Bottled is a last resort — it flattens quickly. Prefer fresh when possible.
  • No simple syrup? 1:1 sugar and water, stirred until dissolved. Or use honey/agave diluted 1:1 with warm water.
  • No bitters? A tiny drop of orange zest oil or a pinch of salt can help in a pinch, but bitters are worth keeping.
  • No espresso? Strong cold brew concentrate works for espresso martinis.

Batching Rules of Thumb

  • Never put ice in the bottle.
  • Never put fizz (soda, tonic, sparkling wine) in the bottle.
  • Add cold water only for stirred drinks that won’t get dilution in the glass.
  • Label the bottle with name, date, and pour size.
  • Citrus batches are best within 24 hours.
